Tax Filing Season Begins
The IRS officially opened the 2026 tax filing season on January 26 and is now accepting federal income tax returns for the 2025 tax year. Taxpayers have until Wednesday, April 15, 2026, to file their returns, and filing early can help reduce stress, prevent delays, and speed up the refund process.
Most refunds are issued within 21 days, especially for those who choose to e-file and opt for direct deposit, which remains the fastest and most secure way to receive funds. Early filing is also encouraged as a safeguard against identity theft and last-minute complications.
Taxpayers claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) should expect a slightly longer wait, with most refunds projected to arrive by March 2, 2026. The IRS will begin offering estimated deposit dates through its“Where’s My Refund?” tool starting February 21, 2026, allowing filers to track their refund status more easily.
